Converting from Manual to Automatic: What You Need for a Seamless Swap.

In the world of racing, manual gearboxes are for fun, but automatics are for winning. Most racers eventually get tired of missing third gear or replacing clutches every three months and decide to make the switch.

However, a manual-to-auto swap isn’t just a "bolt-in" job. If you treat it like one, you’ll end up with vibrations, a car that won't start, or a transmission that burns out on the first drive. Here is the no-nonsense checklist of what you actually need for a seamless conversion.

1. The Drivetrain Core: Flexplate & Converter

You’re tossing the flywheel and clutch. You need their automatic counterparts.

  • The Flexplate: You must match the engine’s balance (External vs. Internal) and the bolt pattern of your new torque converter. For any build over 500HP, an SFI-rated flexplate is mandatory. If a stock flexplate shatters at 7,000 RPM, it acts like a circular saw through your floorboards.

  • The Torque Converter: This is the most critical part of the swap. You need a stall speed matched to your engine's power band. Pro Tip: Don’t guess. Give BDR your cam specs and turbo size so we can spec the right stall.

2. The Transmission & Bellhousing

  • Case Fitment: A TH400 is significantly "fatter" than most manual gearboxes (like a TKO or T5). You may need to "massage" your transmission tunnel with a hammer or a plasma cutter.

  • Adapters: If you’re putting a Powerglide or TH400 behind a Barra or RB, you’ll need a specific BDR Cut-Bell or an adapter plate. Ensure your crankshaft pilot bushing is removed; otherwise, the torque converter won't seat properly, and you’ll destroy the transmission pump instantly.

3. Cooling: The #1 Killer of Automatics

Manuals don't care about heat; automatics die from it.

  • The Cooler: You cannot rely on a factory radiator "loop." You need a dedicated, high-flow external transmission cooler.

  • The Lines: Use -6AN or -8AN braided lines. Avoid cheap rubber hoses and hose clamps; high-performance automatics run high line pressures that will blow a rubber hose right off the fitting, spraying flammable ATF all over your hot exhaust.

4. Shifter & Electronics

  • The Shifter: You need an aftermarket race shifter (like the BDR Bang Shift). This isn't just for gear selection; it’s for safety.

  • Neutral Safety Switch: Your manual car had a clutch switch. Your new auto needs a Neutral Safety Switch so the car only starts in Park or Neutral. Do not bypass this.

  • Reverse Lights: You’ll need to re-wire your reverse light trigger to the switch on your new shifter to keep the car street-legal.

5. The Final Link: Driveshaft & Speedo

  • Driveshaft Length: Almost every manual-to-auto swap requires a change in driveshaft length. The slip-yoke diameter and spline count will also likely change (e.g., switching from a 28-spline manual to a 30-spline TH400).

  • Speedometer: Most race automatics don't have a speedometer gear. If you need a working speedo for the street, you’ll likely need a GPS-based gauge or an electronic conversion kit.

Swap Checklist: At A Glance

Component Manual Setup New Automatic Setup
Engine Link Flywheel / Clutch SFI Flexplate / Torque Converter
Control Pedal / Shift Lever BDR Billet Shifter / Transbrake Button
Cooling None Required High-Flow External Cooler & AN Lines
Safety Clutch Start Switch Neutral Safety Switch (on Shifter)
Driveshaft Existing Length Custom Length / New Slip Yoke

Converting to an automatic is the single best move you can make for consistency, but it is expensive. Between the gearbox, the converter, the shifter, and the custom driveshaft, you will likely spend 20% more than your initial "budget" suggests.

If you try to save money by using a "cheap" converter or skipping the trans cooler, you’ll be buying a second transmission within a month. Do it once, do it right.
