Building a Bulletproof TH400: The Stages of Performance Upgrades.
The Turbo 400 (TH400) is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the transmission world. But let’s be clear: a stock TH400 from a 1970s wreck is a 400HP unit. If you put 1000HP through a factory-spec box, you’re just turning expensive parts into glitter.
At Big Dog Racing, we categorize builds into "Stages." If you buy a Stage 4 for a street cruiser, you're wasting money. If you buy a Stage 1 for a 9-second drag car, you're an idiot. Here is how to choose your level of "bulletproof."
Stage 1: The "Tuff Street" Build (Up to 600HP)
This is for the guy with a cammed LS or a mild big-block who wants reliability, not a dedicated race box.
-
The Hardware: High-energy clutch packs, a recalibrated valve body for firmer shifts, and a heavy-duty 34-element sprag.
-
The Goal: Eliminate the "lazy" factory shifts and prevent the common intermediate sprag failure.
-
The Verdict: Perfect for high-performance street cars that see occasional track time.
Stage 2: Street/Strip Performance (Up to 900HP)
Now we’re getting serious. This stage is designed for boosted street cars or nitrous builds.
-
The Hardware: Includes everything in Stage 1 plus a fixed line pressure valve body and an upgraded input shaft. We also switch to a manual valve body (Forward or Reverse pattern).
-
The Goal: Prevent shaft twist and ensure the clutches don't slip when the torque hits.
-
The Verdict: The "sweet spot" for most 10-second street cars in Australia.
Stage 3: The Pro-Street Beast (Up to 1250HP)
This is where we move away from "modified factory" into "race-spec" territory.
-
The Hardware: Billet Input Shaft and a Billet Forward Clutch Hub. We also integrate a Transbrake for consistent, violent launches.
-
The Goal: Strength. At 1000HP, the factory forward hub is a known "fuse" that will shatter. Billet is the only answer.
-
The Verdict: Essential for Barra/LS turbo builds pushing 25+ psi of boost.
Stage 4: The Outlaw / SFI Spec (1500HP - 2500HP+)
If you are at this level, the only thing "TH400" about this gearbox is the name.
-
The Hardware: SFI-Approved 2-Piece Case (No more blankets!), 300M Billet Internals, and an Aluminum Super Drum. This setup is designed to handle the most violent launches possible.
-
The Goal: Survival and Safety. This build prevents case flex and contains internal explosions.
-
The Verdict: If you’re running 8 seconds or faster, this isn't an "upgrade"—it’s a requirement.
Comparison: Which Stage Do You Need?
| Feature | Stage 1 | Stage 2 | Stage 3 | Stage 4 |
| Max HP | 600HP | 900HP | 1250HP | 2000HP+ |
| Case | OEM | OEM | OEM / Shield | SFI 2-Piece |
| Input Shaft | Stock HD | Upgraded Steel | Billet 300M | Max-Duty Billet |
| Transbrake | No | Optional | Yes | Yes (Pro-Tree) |
| Usage | Cruiser | Street/Strip | Drag/Heavy Boost | Outlaw / Pro-Mod |
The most expensive mistake you can make is "under-speccing" your gearbox to save $1,000. When a Stage 2 fails because you put 1100HP through it, you lose the initial investment plus the cost of the tow, the oil cleanup, and the inevitable Stage 4 you should have bought in the first place.
Be honest about your dyno numbers. If you’re aiming for 1000HP, build for 1250HP. A transmission with a "buffer" lasts seasons; a transmission at its limit lasts weeks.
